Kiel Week is not only one of the largest and most prestigious sailing events in the world and one of the largest public festivals in Northern Europe. It is also an ideal forum where research and science can enter into a dialogue with society.
As part of the traditional “kieler uni live” programme, the ROOTS Cluster of Excellence once again presented its work on basic processes in human societies of the past with exhibits and hands-on activities this year. A particular focus was placed on the close links between different disciplines within ROOTS and cooperation with external partners.
For example, the Ancient DNA Research group at the Institute of Clinical Molecular Biology (IKMB) showed guests at the ROOTS stand how DNA can be extracted from strawberries using simple methods. The hands-on experiment was used by the team led by Prof Dr Ben Krause-Kyora and Prof Dr Almut Nebel to explain what information about the past and present is encoded in ancient human, animal or plant DNA.
