In our lab, we explore the underlying mechanisms between chronic bacterial infections and carcinogenesis. We focus on the human mucosa, known as the major crossing point for molecular interaction between our body and the environment. It is also the site where pathogens initiate their infections and where our defense system is challenged to rapidly counteract any approaching assaults. Repeated infection may lead to permanent damage of the mucosal epithelium and subsequently to carcinogenesis. We want to reach a better understanding of these molecular interactions to pave the way towards better prevention and treatment of the disease.
