Rent-a-scientist - IKMB contributes to science communication programme

October 25, 2022 - 11:45

Rent-a-scientist is a programme to bring scientists in contact with pupils in public schools. From the 26th to 30th September, scientists from the Kiel region went to schools and communicated their science.

From the IKMB working group "Biomedical Informatics", Florian Uellendahl-Werth presented the basics of genetic association studies and results of a genetic study on COVID19 to 14 11th-graders of the advanced biology class at the Gymnasium Kronshagen. In the second half of the event, the pupils discussed the opportunities and risks of genetic screenings in the light of the facts just learned. In this way, not only the science, but also its potential effect on their own lives could be discussed directly. Florian hopes that this immediate way of communicating science helps clarifying important scientific ideas and might inspire one or two students to consider a career in science: "I am very happy that I got to present science I was involved in to these curious young people. Given the opportunity, I am going to contribute to Rent-A-Scientist next year, too."
