My focus area are microbiome studies, which focus on the molecular analysis of complex microbial communities and their association with inflammatory and environmental diseases, especially of the human intestine. The daily work of our microbiome lab includes not only the high-throughput application of molecular techniques used for the description of microbiota based on marker genes or in broader metagenomic methods, but also the biobanking of stool samples from clinical and epidemiological studies. Our goal is to deepen our knowledge on the complex molecular crosstalk between our microbial diversity and us – with a special focus on the microbes. Understanding how human-associated microbes evolve themselves (and us) over time might be the key to unravel their role in the development of chronic diseases.
