Genomics and Functions of Host Microbiome Systems
Research Description
My research aims to advance knowledge, develop new theories, and create tools to investigate host-microbe systems. Using in silico, in vitro and in vivo approaches, I am investigating how bacterial genomes, bacterial functions and host-microbe interactions change in health vs disease and during human evolution. In this context, I am particularly dedicated to identifying actionable features in host-associated microbiomes that can be used to improve human health. Recently, I focused on the building and characterization of a large collection of human gut microbiomes and bacterial strains in pure culture from worldwide human populations. This resource provides unprecedented access to an extensive amount of unexplored microbial biodiversity that my lab will leverage to lead large-scale cutting-edge genomics, functional and multi-omics studies.
The Global Microbiome Conservancy
With the industrialization of our lifestyles, gut microbiomes experienced drastic reduction in diversity and changes in composition, with unknown consequences on bacterial genomes, microbiome function, gut homeostasis and host immune response. In 2016, I co-founded the Global Microbiome Conservancy, an international consortium of worldwide scientists and clinicians. The mission of the GMbC is to understand the consequences that lifestyle transitions had on host-microbe interactions and health, through the biobanking and functional characterization of the extensive biodiversity of the human gut microbiome. Since its inception, I have been leading the GMbC ecosystem and its scientific program. Starting 2022, I will establish a GMbC hub at CAU of Kiel that will focus on the biobanking and understanding of the microbial biodiversity associated with clinical cohorts recruited worldwide.
